Liaison Committee Had Busy 2007

The St. Louis Equity Liaison Committee had an active 2007. Here are some of the highlights, according to Liaison Kari Ely.

  • John Contini

The Liaison Committee and HotCity Theatre organized a fundraiser for longtime Equity member John Contini. The sold-out event helped John defray costs associated with his recent liver transplant surgery, which, happily, was a huge success. John is now back at work. As John's anti-rejection drugs will be a lifetime financial burden, donations are still being accepted to the John Contini Health Fund and can be mailed to U.S. Bank at 5433 Telegraph Road, St. Louis, MO 63129. (An excellent opening or closing night gift of life.) As John is quick to tell everyone, "Don't forget to sign the back of your driver's license to become an organ donor. It really does work."

  • Equity members, friends and family teamed up with fellow Equity member Anna Blair in the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure.

  • Congratulations and all the best to Landon Shaw and Nichole Trueman for the opening of ColeBeanBay, their new Equity SPT 2 Theatre in St. Genevieve, MO.

  • Kudos to Linda Kennedy, St. Louis Equity member and Kevin Kline Award nominee, who was named one of the Artists of the Year by the Missouri Arts Council.

  • Hats off to Stages St. Louis, which just completed its 21st season as an Equity company and was awarded the Excellence in Arts Award by the St. Louis Arts and Education Council. Stages, a multi Kevin Kline Award recipient, recently moved from an SPT to an LOA-COST contract and continues its capitol contribution campaign aimed at raising $30 million for the construction of a new multi-use theatre complex at a location already selected and acquired in St. Louis County.

  • Philip Boehm, Artistic Director of UpStream Theatre (in its third year), and Kathleen Sitzer, Artistic Director of the New Jewish Theatre (celebrating its 20th season), both announced expanded seasons for 2007-2008, which will include an additional production for each.

  • A sad note was the recent passing of Kitty Robertson, the Managing Director and tour de force behind Ozark Actors Theatre. For her presence on stage and off, Kitty will be sorely missed by all.

  • A standing "O" to Steve Isom, President of the Professional Theatre Awards Committee and creator of the Kevin Kline Awards. Steve, a longtime Equity member and current Liaison, correctly predicted that the awards would promote a significant growth in St. Louis theatre and in the creation of more Equity contracts. The St. Louis theatre community is eagerly awaiting the announcement of the 2007 nominees for the Third Annual Kevin Kline Awards, to be given at the gala in March 2008.
