Actors' Equity Names Thomas J. Miller As Director of Outreach and Career Development

Thomas J. Miller is AEA's Director of Outreach and Career Development

Actors' Equity has appointed Thomas J. Miller as its new Director of Outreach and Career Development. Miller, who has served on Council since 1997, joined the Equity Staff on Monday, Oct 22, 2007 at National Headquarters in New York City.

"We are delighted to welcome Tom Miller to our staff, "said Executive Director John P. Connolly. "Through his extraordinary work on the Council and various committees, he has demonstrated a strong, dedicated commitment to the Union, and will play a vital role in expanding Equity's Outreach and Career Development programs on a national basis. It is imperative for Equity to build union awareness and educate the fast-growing non-Equity sector about the benefits of union membership."

Miller received his B.S. in Education from Indiana University and taught English and Speech Communication before joining Equity in 1983. He has performed in regional theatres and industrials and toured throughout the United States and Europe. He served on the Council in both the Principal and Chorus categories. Tom served as the Chair of the Eastern Stock Contract Committee, where he developed contract proposals and chaired numerous negotiations. He has also served as Chair of the Election Procedures Committee and Gypsy Robe Sub-Committee and has served on the House Affairs, Joint Equity-League EEOC, Casino Contract Committee, and Executive Review and Search Committees. As a Chorus Councillor, he served 9 years as Vice Chair of the ACCA (Advisory Committee on Chorus Affairs).

Starting in 1999, Miller served as Chair of the Eastern Membership Education Committee, where he implemented a variety of ongoing events and programs to draw students, new and existing members into the Union. Among these activities are new member orientations and focus groups; student presentations at the high school, college and graduate school levels; and education and career seminars. He also served as Vice Chair of the Entry to Equity Committee, and participates annually as Equity's spokesperson at BackStage's ActorFest.

"I'm eager and excited to join Equity's staff," said Miller. "For nearly 100 years Actors' Equity Association has served as the conscience of the theatrical industry representing the interests of professional Actors with a dignity steeped in a tradition of inclusion, decency and integrity. I am proud to bring my experiences, training and passion to this organization in the further service of our membership".

In addition to student and new members outreach, Miller will create ongoing career development seminars for new and existing members to enhance their professional skills and business knowledge, and build an ongoing connection to the Union; and act as national coordinator for the Equity Membership Candidate (EMC) program.

Equity's student outreach program began in 2001, when Council set a top priority of reaching out and educating theatre students and other potential future members about AEA and the benefits of union membership. Since then, the program has reached over 3000 students at more than 60 colleges and universities. With over 400 college level theatre-training programs in the US, Equity plans to implement the program on a much wider basis in the future.
