B. Iden Payne Awards Go to AEA Actors, Theatres

The Austin Circle of Theatres' 33rd annual B. Iden Payne Awards presented on October 21, 2007 honored achievements in local theatre for the 2006-2007 season.

The Noel Coward comedy, PRESENT LAUGHTER, mounted by the Zach Scott Theatre, was voted Outstanding Production of a Comedy and brought awards to Jamie Goodwin for lead performance and Helen Merino for supporting performance. Zach's revival of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, took home the prize for Outstanding Production of Music Theatre and honored the performances of Leslie K. Hollingsworth (lead actress) and the late Joe York (lead actor), in what turned out to be his final performance.

Other Equity recipients were: Amy Dowling, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL (Zach); Jill Blackwood, AS YOU LIKE IT; Wray Crawford, THE BOYS NEXT DOOR; Martin Burke, TAKE ME OUT; and Michelle Flanagan, HAMLET.

Kathleen Fletcher and Breanna Stogner, PARALLEL LIVES: THE KATHY AND MO SHOW, received the Outstanding Ensemble Performance Award, and Sean Maddox, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, was recognized in the Youth Performance category.

A highlight of the evening was Karen Kuykendall accepting a Special Recognition Award for Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre. Visibly frail, but still spirited, Ms. Kuykendall, who died ten days later, accepted with pride.

Dirk van Allen (2005 Lucy Jordan Award recipient) and M.J. Vandivier served as Masters of Ceremonies, introducing the presenters who were all local AEA members.
