First Equity Theatre Opens

Shreveport, LA

The River City Repertory Theatre (RCRT), the first professional theatre in Shreveport and Bossier City, Louisiana, opened on June 29, 2006 with a four performance run of Lillian Helman's classic, THE LITTLE FOXES.

"We are pleased that the producers, Patric McWilliams and Robert Busick, wanted their new theatre to be professional" said Business Reps Luther Goins and Ryan Guhde of Equity's Chicago office. "We have been working with them, administering the Special Appearance Agreement, and we hope they will move up to a Small Professional Theatre Agreement next season."

"We are interested in developing a community of actors with professional experience and professional standards," Mr. McWilliams, who also directed THE LITTLE FOXES, told The Forum, a local Shreveport newsweekly. "We want to involve and reach out to actors and technicians who want to develop those standards in their work and even to aid and abet them in auditioning away from here. We are looking for theatre people who want to step up their game and meet standards that would result in a professional theatre… In the early phase, being Equity really gets us listed as a professional company that exists here. The perk early on is to get the cities and state recognized. Later down the road, there is the potential of having critics in from the region and being taken seriously as a theatre destination."

Richard Folmer is an Equity member living in the area. "An Equity theatre here would, of course, give me the opportunity to perform, should they want to cast me, and be compensated without having to look elsewhere for work as a union actor," he said.
