AEA Member Veronica Griego, Philadelphia Stage Manager, Dead at 43

Veronica Marie Griego

Members of the Philadelphia theatre community are mourning the loss of a friend and colleague, Veronica Marie Griego, 43, who died in a car accident on April 8th.

Ms. Griego worked in numerous Philadelphia-area theatres as a Stage Manager, producer and writer. She was the associate producer at Prince Music Theater, focusing on the development of new musical theatre works.

In addition, she served as general manager for both the Azuka Theatre and PlayPenn's New Play Development Conference and produced the annual theatre Barrymore Awards for the Theater Alliance of Greater Philadelphia.

"Veronica was an extraordinarily upbeat and talented theatre professional who had worked with the Prince on numerous individual projects over the past 10 years," said Marjorie Samoff, Prince producing director. "In December, she joined our staff as associate producer to work on our upcoming new shows and film program - projects where her positive personality and boundless optimism made seemingly impossible tasks look easy. We are all in shock and deeply saddened."

"The theatre community has lost an amazing woman and I have lost a dear friend," said Azuka Theatre's Kevin Glaccum. "We were looking forward to many years of collaboration with this gifted writer and artist. She will be greatly missed."

At New Mexico State University, Ms. Griego majored in Language and Theatre Arts. She earned a bachelor's degree there and then went to Tulane University, in New Orleans for postgraduate studies, and earned two Masters degrees there in scenic design/lighting design and stage management. She then began her career in theatre, joining Equity in 1989.

Ms. Griego settled in Philadelphia after landing a job there. She has been most associated with production stage managing and production managing, working with local theatres such as the Arden Theatre, the Philadelphia Theatre Company, the Wilma Theater, the Walnut Street Theatre, the Philadelphia Young Playwrights, the Prince Music Theater, the Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival, the Amaryllis Theatre Company, PlayPenn, and the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. Nationally, she worked with companies including Music Theatre of Louisville, Tulane Summer Lyric Theater, the George Street Playhouse, the Joyce Theater, the Actors' Theater of Phoenix, Le Petite Theatre and Capitol City Playhouse. She has toured with the Jose Greco Dance Company and numerous children's theatre companies as well as with dance, opera and music companies.

She is survived by father George Griego, mother Misao Griego, brother George Joseph, sister Rose Ann, and her fiancÚ, Buck Schirner, his daughter Emily Durante and her beloved dog Yuki.
