Equity New Member Reception is SRO

Equity’s Eastern Regional Membership Education Committee hosted its New Member Reception on Monday, January 26, 2004 in the Council Room, drawing an SRO crowd of eager new members. Equity Councillor/Committee Chair Thomas J. Miller emceed the event, assisted by Committee members and Councillors Mark Aldrich, Nick Lociento, Jeanne Lehman, Scott McGowan, Paige Price, Judy Rice, and Scott Watanabe.

Miller welcomed special guest Priscilla Lopez, who is currently starring in ANNA IN THE TROPICS on Broadway. Ms. Lopez has done 10 Broadway shows, including: A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE (Tony Award), A CHORUS LINE (Tony Nomination, Obie Award), THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG, NINE, LYSISTRATA, PIPPIN, COMPANY, HER FIRST ROMAN HENRY SWEET HENRY and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S. In A CHORUS LINE, Ms. Lopez introduced the quintessential Actors’ song, “What I Did For Love,” which epitomizes their struggle and commitment.

Priscilla talked about growing up in the Bronx and attending the High School for the Performing Arts on West 46th Street. “I knew that I wanted to be on Broadway, which was literally, right down the block.” She auditioned for five years before she got her first Broadway show and her Equity card in 1966. She encouraged actors to hone their skills, keep a positive attitude and “audition for everything.”

Equity’s Student Outreach and Education Coordinator, Rob Roznowski, followed with his skillful and entertaining power point presentation about AEA. The talk covers Equity’s history, how Equity is organized and governed, benefits and services, and member responsibilities.

Committee Chair Thomas J. Miller said, “We had a great turn-out. I was very impressed by their intelligent and perceptive questions, their attentiveness, and their enthusiasm in becoming Union members.”

Equity staff members answered questions about different services and benefits provided by the Union. Audition Center Director Jerry Cole talked about EPA’s and chorus auditions; Membership Director Michael DeMono answered questions about dues; LORT Business Reps Beverly Sloan and Lawrence Lorczak talked about the importance of filing your contract, favored nations, riders and contract benefits. AFCU information was provided by Steve Sobotta.

Special thanks to staff member Jeff Stanley and committee members Mark Aldrich and Scott Watanabe for manning the sign-in table.
