Hollywood High Students Rave About Equity Seminar

The North Hollywood High School Class of 2004 paid a visit to the Big Apple on Thursday, April 22nd, coming directly from the LA “red-eye” to Actor’s Equity headquarters, where they participated in an exciting outreach seminar conducted by Outreach/Education Director Rob Roznowski.

Chaperoning the students were Drama Director Bob Arnold, Social Studies teacher Shirley Hawk, and Entertainment Media coordinator Diana Sweeney.

In his “hands-on” seminar, Rob talks about the history of Actors’ Equity, and the benefits of joining the Union, as well as other aspects of “the business.” Students got to role-play and were eager to learn more about the challenges of making a career as an actor. Rob also provided them with a “reality check” about the salary levels and employment prospects that they face as they begin their careers.

“This was a perfect kick-off for the students’ New York ‘Broadway’ experience,” said Arnold. “Everyone at Actors' Equity was extremely polite and informative. Our students left with a better understanding of Union benefits for actors and how Broadway works, which helped greatly at the Q & A sessions we had with Broadway and Off-Broadway casts after the shows we saw. The actors were blown away at the questions that we asked, particularly regarding the actors’ suggestions on when’s the right time to join the union. I I give major kudos to Actors’ Equity and the helpful staff – Rob Roznowski, Mary Lou Westerfield and David Lotz – and would highly recommend that any young acting group make this one of their must-dos in New York.”

Here’s a comment from one of the students:

“This was my first, and definitely not my last, trip to New York. The most inspiring part of New York was the huge presence of theatre, everywhere we went. Visiting Actor's Equity helped to make me appreciate the theatre even more. Learning about how the union was started, its different influences in and around the national theatre scene, and how it continues to support the artists and stage managers was educational and enlightening. For the aspiring performers and drama lovers in our group, it gave us hope that there are still people out there that support and encourage the theatre and what it has to offer to the world. I thank [Equity] so much for giving us the opportunity to learn more about the union and its impact in New York as well as other states.”

Rob has recently taken his seminar "on the road" to these destinations:

  • Actorfest LA: May 8
  • UNC/Chapel Hill: May 11
  • Syracuse University: May 14
  • NYC New Member Reception: May 17

    And coming soon…
  • NY SAG Expo: May 21
  • Minneapolis New Member Reception: June 7

Students from North Hollywood High School give a "thumbs up" to Equity's Outreach/Education seminars.
