Equity Salutes The Lillian Booth Actorsí Home of The Actorsí Fund of America As We Celebrate Edwin Forrest Day and Shakespeare's 440th Birthday

"There Shakespeare, on whose forehead climb The crowns of the world; oh, eyes sublime With tears and laughter for all time!"

Elizabeth Barrett Browning, "A Vision of Poets"

Edwin Forrest (1806-1872), one of America's leading 19th Century actors, dreamed of a retirement home for actors, and when he died, he left most of his estate to create just such a haven. The Edwin Forrest Home continued to be used as a retirement home for elderly actors until the 1980s, when it was decided to sell the property and use the funds to create a new nursing home in Englewood, New Jersey. The main section of the Lillian Booth Actors' Home is still called the "Edwin Forrest Wing." Each year, on April 23rd, residents there follow the precepts in Forrest's will by celebrating the birthday of William Shakespeare, but they also use the day to honor Edwin Forrest for his generosity and love of the American theatre.
