Arkansas Rep Production
Wins Kaufman & Hart Award

THE SLEEPER, written by Catherine Butterfield and produced at Arkansas Repertory Theatre, has received the Kaufman & Hart Award as best new American comedy, reports cast member (and Equity Councillor) Clarinda Ross.

"At a time when most readings of new plays are done in the author's living room, this was a refreshing approach to developing new work. This theatre has raised a great deal of money to support the Award, which directly results in jobs for our members. This is an all AEA cast, of New York and Los Angeles-based actors, and our play got the benefit of a beautifully realized full production," Ms. Ross writes. "I think this Kaufman & Hart Award will put Arkansas Rep on the map in the way the Humana Festival distinguished the Actors' Theatre of Louisville."

The playwright, Catherine Butterfield, also an Equity member, started out as an actor in New York and has had several plays produced, most notably JOINED AT THE HEAD at Manhattan Theatre Club. Her screenplay, UNDER MY SKIN, is currently in pre-production and will star Equity member Annette Benning.

The Sleeper was selected from 220 scripts.

Arkansas Repertory Theatre, a LORT house located in Little Rock, is in its 29th season.
