"... Unions make it possible to do this work as a living." Amy Aquino, New Member Reception Guest Speaker

By Ray Singh
Western Region Membership Education Committee Member

Amy Aquino

A warm and informative welcome was given to the new Members of Actors' Equity Association at the Los Angeles New Member Reception held on Wednesday, April 11th, 2012 at AEA's Hollywood office. Maura Murphy-Barrosse, Equity Staff member hosted the event and introduced Guest Speaker Amy Aquino.

With a wealth of experience as an actress in theatre (THE HEIDI CHRONICLES, LIVING OUT, THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA), film (WORKING GIRL, IN GOOD COMPANY, MOONSTRUCK) and television (HARRY'S LAW, ER) along with an abundance of knowledge about the Unions, Amy Aquino was the highlight of the event. She provided our new Members many insights via her "memory lane of Equity".

We follow Amy as she tells how she worked as an actress in various New York theatres. She leads us through one of her proudest moments of having an Equity card. Describing how a journey to Minneapolis to seek work opportunities proved especially fruitful for her career, because as an Equity Member she was able to audition for all six Equity theatres in Minneapolis. One of Amy's most memorable moments working in theatre is a production of SECRETS OF THE TRADE at the tiny (30-seat) Black Dahlia Theatre in LA with Tony Award Winner John Glover. VARIETY called it a "flawless production" and it eventually played in NY.

In addition to having a rich and varied working career and personal life Amy serves as the Co-Secretary Treasurer of SAG-AFTRA and has spent nearly 15 years as a Union officer. She emphasizes the role Unions play in the everyday life of an Actor and stresses "always work Union... Unions make it possible to do this work as a living".

Amy closed her talk with the advice "if you're funny - use it" and "doing theatre keeps you sharp".

Also speaking at the reception was Tina Hookom, Director of Social Services for The Actors Fund Western Region. The Actors Fund, a national organization with offices in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago directly serves nearly 12,000 performing arts and entertainment professionals across the country every year, and hundreds of thousand through online resources. In providing care and service to professionals throughout the industry, The Fund's programs are wide in scope, responsive in nature, and produce significant results, affecting the lives of people in our community year after year. For more information about the services available through the Actors' Fund go to their website at www.actorsfund.org.

Introducing Actors Federal Credit Union www.actorsfcu.com benefits and services to our new Members was Gabriel Olmos.

Michael Dotson, Equity Councillor discussed and answered questions regarding Equity Principal and Chorus auditions.

Loyal Membership Education Committee Member Maggie McCollester and Equity Staff Joe Garber, Senior Business Representative, Patrick Lee, Business Representative and Doug Dixon, Membership Associate were also on deck to navigate us through the world of Equity membership.

Richard Ostlund, Executive Associate to the Western Regional Board/Western Regional Director, encouraged attendees to become involved in Equity. He spoke about interesting and rewarding Committee opportunities available to Members.

We welcome our new Members and embrace them as part of the Union community.

LA New Member Receptions are held twice a year. If you were unable to attend the most recent event, the next Reception will be held in the Fall. Watch Equity's website for date and time.
