Philadelphia Update
Barrymore Awards logo On Monday, October 7, 2002, the 8th Annual Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre were held on the University of Pennsylvania campus in the spacious Zellenbach Theatre at the Annenberg Center in Philadelphia.

The awards were admirably hosted by Philadelphia AEA member Tony Braithwaite. He had the audience howling with his off-the-cuff impersonations of Arden Theatre's artistic director Terrance Nolan and Philadelphia SAG branch President and AEA member Tom McCarthy.

Philadelphia area AEA members who were recognized with nominations for their work in the 2001-2002 season included Jeffery Coon, Ben Dibble, Marshall Drew, Janis Dardaris, Kristine Fraelich, Lenny Haas, Mollie Hall, Mary Martello, Paul Meshejian, Paul Nolan, Peter Pryor and Greg Wood. Two area actors were awarded Barrymores: Hazel Bowers - supporting actress in a play - THE BIRTHDAY PARTY - Lantern Theatre Company and Scott Greer - leading actor in a musical - BABY CASE - Arden Theatre Company.

It proved to be a very special evening for Scott Greer - as he also received the F. Otto Haas award for emerging theatre artist - which includes a financial award generously presented by Carole Haas Gravagno. It was also a very special evening for AEA stage manager Brady Gonsalves. Brady, who was working backstage, craftily worked it out with the staff of Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia (which administer the Barrymore Awards) to make a surprise proposal of marriage to Barrymore administrator Jennifer Hayden during the award ceremony. It was a lovely, unexpected moment.

And by the way, Jennifer said yes.
