Congratulazione!
Laura Griffith Dons Gypsy Robe In “The Light in the Piazza”

Laura Griffith, a chorus member in the Lincoln Center Theatre’s production of THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA is the newest recipient of Equity’s famous Gypsy Robe. The colorful robe was presented to Ms. Griffith during a backstage ceremony at the Vivian Beaumont theatre on opening night (April 18, 2005), recreating a time-honored tradition that began over 50 years ago.

Embroidered and embellished with mementos from recent Broadway musicals, the robe is given to the cast member who has the most Broadway chorus credits. Prior to Lincoln Center, Ms. Griffith appeared in SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS and OKLAHOMA! The robe was presented to her by Michelle Kittrell, who received the robe in ALL SHOOK UP.

Equity’s Gypsy Robe Director, Terry Marone, kicked off the festive celebration by introducing former robe recipient Jack Dabdoub, who wore the robe in SHOWBOAT. She also introduced Equity Executive Director Alan Eisenberg; Communications Director David Lotz; Senior Business Representative Zalina Hoosein; and Equity Chorus Councillor Thomas Jay Miller.

Surrounded by the entire cast and VIPs, Ms. Kittrell described the origins of the Gypsy Robe ceremony. Ms. Griffith beamed "contentissimo" as she put on the garment, and then circled the stage three times as each cast member touched the robe for good luck.

Emphasizing their historical importance, Ms. Marone noted that robes are now on display at the Smithsonian Institute and the Museum of the City of New York. Another robe is on permanent display at the Equity Audition Center in New York City.
