New York Shakespeare Festival, Playwrights' Horizons and Second Stage Make Up for Lost Auditions

Three prominent Off Broadway institutional theatres - the New York Shakespeare Festival, Playwrights' Horizons and Second Stage - will make up for lost auditions, in an agreement brokered by Equity Business Representative Sheila Mathews and Audition Director Jerry Cole. The agreement was announced by Equity's Eastern Regional Director, Carol Waaser.

According to Mathews, under the Agreement Governing Employment Off Broadway, the institutional theatres are supposed to a do a minimum of two sets of joint general auditions each season, for a minimum of two days each, plus three days for each individual theatre, totaling seven days. If the theatres don't hold joint general auditions, each one is required to hold 10 days of Equity Principal Auditions per season. "Because the auditions were previously organized by Manhattan Theatre Club, which no longer operates under the Off Broadway agreement, the required auditions were never held."

Equity and the three theatres agreed to rectify the situation by having holding three sets of EPA's prior to 2003; then they will start fresh in 2004. Consequently, joint auditions were held on August 18, 19 and 20, and additional dates are scheduled for September 17 - 18th. New York Shakespeare Festival and Playwrights' Horizons will also schedule a hold a third day for musicals. For audition information, visit Casting Call
