Actors and Stage Managers To March With Musicians, Stage Hands And Other Entertainment Union/Guild Members In Show of Solidarity

On Saturday, September 6, Actors' Equity Association, the Union for Professional Actors and Stage Managers, will join other entertainment unions and guilds from the Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds (COBUG) to march up Fifth Avenue in New York City's Labor Day Parade. Actors and Stage Managers will participate with musicians, stagehands and other theatre industry personnel in this annual event, which brings together thousands of workers and labor supporters from dozens of unions in the tri-state area.

The COBUG contingent will be closely followed by Equity's "sister" unions, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), and other members of the 4As, the Associated Actors and Artistes of America.

The 2003 Labor Day Parade coincides with Actors' Equity's 90th Anniversary. Founded in 1913, Equity now represents more than 45,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans for its members. Equity is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. Equity's current President is Patrick Quinn.

"If there ever was a time when a show of unity between the entertainment unions and guilds was necessary, that time is now," said President Quinn.

"The Labor Day Parade demonstrates the powerful and vital role that labor unions play in our great city," said Actors' Equity Executive Director Alan Eisenberg. "We invite all Equity and 4As members as well as theatre supporters to join us on this important occasion."

COBUG is comprised of 15 member unions and guilds, collectively representing over 75,000 workers in the live entertainment industry who work on Broadway. The Coalition represents all aspects of the Broadway theatre, from actors, musicians, playwrights, directors and choreographers, to set, costume and lighting designers, stagehands, ushers and ticket-takers, box office personnel, wardrobe, hairstylists, porters, press agents and company managers. The mission of COBUG is to strengthen the position of every constituent union and guild within the industry and "to make our collective voice and concerns heard by employers, public officials and the theatre-going public."

Anthony DePaulo, Business Manager for IATSE Local 1, Stagehands, and Eisenberg serve as COBUG'S Co-Chairs. The members are: Actors' Equity Association; American Federation of Musicians Local 802; American Guild of Musical Artists; Dramatists Guild; IATSE Local 1, Stage Hands; IATSE Local 306, Ushers and Ticket Takers; IATSE Local 751, Ticket Sellers; IATSE Local 764, Wardrobe; IATSE Local 798, Make-Up/Hair; IATSE Local USA 829, United Scenic Artists; IATSE Local 18032, Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers; IUOE Local 30, Operating Engineers; SEIU Local 32BJ, Theatre Division; Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers; and Theatrical Teamsters Local 817 IBT.

AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney is this year's Honorary Grand Marshal. The Parade is sponsored by New York City's Central Labor Council.
