Actors Fund Launches Artists' Health Insurance Resource Center (AHIRC) Website
Artists in this country are twice as likely to be uninsured as the general population, which means that almost one in every three artists does not have health insurance. This is a crisis that deeply affects the lives of our members, their families, and artists of all disciplines everywhere, often relegating them to inferior health care and burdening them with ruinous debt. Indicators point to higher health insurance costs and increases in the number of uninsured in the near future.
For the past four years, the Artists' Health Insurance Resource Center (AHIRC) has been the central resource for artists nationwide in finding affordable health insurance, with more than 650 visitors a day accessing the web site. Established by The Actors' Fund in 1998 in partnership with the National Endowment of the Arts, and recently expanded and redesigned with funding from The Commonwealth Fund, the AHIRC website is one of the most comprehensive sources of health insurance information available on the Internet.
The new web database now includes information on local health care for the uninsured and underinsured, all government-subsidized programs, disease-specific assistance, sources of emergency financial aid for medical and hospital bills as well as news about grassroots and legislative efforts to expand access to health care.
