| Nominees Announced for South Florida's 27th Annual Carbonell Awards in regional theater |
|
The chamber musical James Joyce's The Dead, and the classic The King and I lead the 27th Annual Carbonell Awards with nine nominations apiece for South Florida's best regional theater during the 2001-2002 season. Smokey Joe's Café and Ruthless are close behind with eight apiece. The King and I and Smokey Joe's Cafe both played at The Actor's Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables, which leads the regional companies with 23 nominations. James Joyce's The Dead was the first musical ever mounted by the current regime at the GableStage, also in Coral Gables, which is second among South Florida resident companies with 19 total nominations. Among them, Romulus Linneys' A Lesson Before Dying led plays with five nominations. The Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami received 15 nominations, including four each for the drama Proofdirected by author David Auburn, the farce Caught in the Net and the revue The Soul of Gershwin.A total of 32 separate plays and musicals from 12 regional companies from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches received nominations. In all, more than two dozen professional troupes mounted over 100 eligible shows from Miami through Fort Lauderdale to the Palm Beaches for the season that officially ended on Labor Day. The Hollywood Playhouse near Ft. Lauderdale and the New Theatre in Coral Gables, near Miami, received 13 nominations apiece. From the Palm Beach area, The Florida Stage in Manalapan earned six and the Caldwell Theatre Company got five. Lee Blessing's Black Sheep is nominated for Best New Work, along with Nilo Cruz' Hortensia and the Museum of Dreams, Smithereens by Mario Diament, Portrait by Ivonne Azurdia, and Teo Castellanos' monodrama NE 2nd Avenue. Winners will be announced at the 27th Annual Carbonell Award Ceremonies on Monday, Nov. 18 at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. Marc Kudisch, Tony Award nominee for the current Broadway hit musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, will star along with several other performers to be announced, with the Peter Graves Orchestra. Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door, and a $200 dinner/show package for sponsors as a benefit to the awards' student scholarship program. For information, call the Broward Center box office at 954-462-0222. Show-only group discounts are available. The Carbonell Awards were founded in 1976 by the South Florida Critics Circle, which relinquished administrative control of the program earlier this year. Transition to a new community-based board of trustees, and an awards council comprised of theater and arts executives is currently under way. Some critics continue to form a minority of the regional voting panel, and continue as the sole voters for non-resident touring shows, selected separately in a single ballot to produce winners. 27th Annual Carbonell Award Nominations:COMBINED (Plays and Musicals)
