|Report from Atlanta Membership Meeting|
By Equity's Southeast Traveling Business Rep, George Hamrah
The Atlanta Membership Meeting was held on Monday, November 3, 2003, at Manuel's Tavern. Equity's Eastern Regional Director, Carol Waaser, and Southeast Traveling Business Rep George Hamrah, attended.
28 members attended the general meeting. New members to the Atlanta Liaison Committee were elected for five vacant seats and one alternate. Reelected were Yolanda Asher and Deadra Moore. New members are Susan Shalhoub Larkin, Edith Ivey, and Wayne Steadman. Jon Goldstein was elected as an alternate.
A large portion of the meeting was devoted to health issues, explaining the new health eligibility rules and discussing various scenarios (using local theatres as examples) that would allow members to obtain their coverage.
Carol Waaser discussed the new self-pay dental insurance option that is being offered by the Equity-League Trust Funds starting on January 1, 2004, and also discussed the Actors Health Insurance Resource Center (AHIRC), a valuable resource for members who are seeking health insurance. A committee member (also on both the local SAG & AFTRA committees) then spoke about the newest developments for a proposed SAG/AFTRA consolidation.
While in Atlanta, Hamrah visited Theatrical Outfit (currently operating under an Letter of Agreement referenced to LORT), now in the process of purchasing and renovating a new facility. This will allow all their operations to be housed under one roof in their own space. (They currently rent the Rialto Theatre, which is part of the University of GA.) Theatrical Outfit recently opened a "readers theatre" production of C.S. Lewis's THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW, adapted and performed by Atlanta Equity member Tom Key and also performed by Atlanta Equity member Carolyn Cook.
Next stop was the Theatre In The Square (SPT 8) in Marietta, GA, where Hamrah caught the matinee of their production of STONES IN HIS POCKETS, performed by Atlanta Equity members Hugh Adams and Christopher Ekholm.
Also visited was the Atlanta Shakespeare Company at the New American Shakespeare Tavern. They are currently presenting their Shakespeare History Extravaganza starting with RICHARD II, followed by HENRY IV, Part I and II and ending with HENRY V. Each play opens one week after the preceding one, so it possible to see all four in November or December.
