Darren Lee Receives Legendary Gypsy Robe In PACIFIC OVERTURES

Darren Lee is the latest recipient of Equity's famous "Gypsy Robe” in the Roundabout Theatre’s production of PACIFIC OVERTURES. The colorful robe was presented to the Chorus member at a special backstage ceremony at Studio 54 on December 2, 2004, recreating an historic, theatrical ritual that began on Broadway over 50 years ago.

Darren, who serves as Dance Captain in addition to his chorus roles in the Stephen Sondheim/John Weidman musical, has numerous Broadway credits, including: THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, SEUSSICAL, KISS ME, KATE, CHICAGO, VICTOR/VICTORIA, GUYS AND DOLLS, MISS SAIGON, SHOGUN, and ON THE TOWN, for which he also received the Gypsy Robe.

"It's a great honor to receive the robe for PACIFIC OVERTURES, which is very much an "ensemble" piece," said Darren. "The extremely talented chorus of Asian American actors plays over 100 roles and I'm proud to be counted among them. This show is a gift from Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman to the Asian acting community, and theater as a whole. Receiving the robe for this production has been the topper to an already paramount experience."

Manoel Felciano, who received the robe in BROOKLYN, THE MUSICAL, made the presentation on stage on opening night. Kicking off the ceremony, Gypsy Robe Director Terry Marone introduced Manoel and other robe recipients, including: Rommy Sandhu (BOMBAY DREAMS), Jack Dabdoub (SHOWBOAT), Bill Nabel (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST), and James Dybas, who received the robe in the original production PACIFIC OVERTURES at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1976.

Marone extended greetings from Equity Executive Director Alan Eisenberg, and introduced Equity Chorus Councillor Thomas Jay Miller, Communications Director David Lotz, and Robe Historian Gloria Rosenthal.
