Merwin Foard Dons Legendary Gypsy Robe in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

Merwin Foard is the latest recipient of Equity's famous "Gypsy Robe,” in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway. The colorful robe was presented to the Chorus member at a special backstage ceremony on December 9, 2004, recreating an historic, theatrical ritual that began on Broadway over 50 years ago.

LA CAGE…is Merwin’s eleventh Broadway show. He previously received the Gypsy Robe in ASSASINS at the Roundabout’s Studio 54 last season.

Darren Lee, who received the robe in PACIFIC OVERTURES and ON THE TOWN, made the presentation on stage on opening night. Kicking off the ceremony, Gypsy Robe Director Terry Marone introduced Darren and other previous robe recipients, including: Austin Colyer (SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN), Rommy Sandhu (BOMBAY DREAMS), Adrian Bailey (LEGS DIAMOND, PRINCE OF CENTRAL PARK, JELLY’ LAST JAM), Harvey Evans (SUNSET BLVD, OKLAHOMA!), Roger Preston Smith (PETER PAN), and La Cage Choreographer Jerry Mitchell. Mitchell said he was honored to receive the robe in the last show he did as a dancer, WILL ROGERS FOLLIES.

Marone extended greetings from Equity Executive Director Alan Eisenberg, and introduced Equity Communications Director David Lotz and Robe Historian Gloria Rosenthal. Joining in the ceremony were: Equity Chorus Councillors Thomas Jay Miller, Joanne Borts, and Scott Watanabe; Equity Principal Councillor Michael Mulheren (joined by his five-week old son, Conor); and Equity staff members Louise Foisy, Marc Kochanski, and Amy Dolan.
