Storybook Musical Theatre

Storybook alumni return to celebrate the 20th Anniversary!

Congratulations to Storybook Musical Theatre on the completion of their 20th year producing original musical adaptations of beloved folk and fairy tales. Since their first season in 1992, SMT has been the only professional children's theater company in the Philadelphia area operating under a continuous TYA contract with Actors' Equity Association. In the past 20 seasons Storybook has cast local AEA members as stage managers and actors in hundreds of roles for 82 productions with a total audience attendance now approaching 400,000. In addition to presenting a quality first theatrical experience to young audiences, Executive Director Marc S. Goldberg and Artistic Director Patricia Goldberg began the SMT Arts in Education Program "Page to Stage" in 1996. This Storybook Musical Theatre program is a vision of the arts as a shared experience and a motivating force for children to read more, to write more and to then express themselves more creatively. Kudos to this dedicated AEA company who have enriched the lives of children and their families for 20 years. Watch for their 21st season beginning in November 2012!

Comments from Storybook Musical Theatre alumni:

"I was 10 years old when Storybook performed their first show. As I grew up, I would enjoy watching the high quality productions that my parent's company would produce. Seeing professional actors making subtle (or not so subtle) choices and not just acting over the top really made an impression on me. Storybook is also one of the few companies where the parents enjoy the shows just as much as their children do. This is what introducing the arts to the next generation is all about, a life long appreciation for culture."
Aileen Goldberg - actress - AEA member since 2010

"My experience working at Storybook was positive across the board - high quality productions, thoroughly professional people, and never any Equity issues as an actor. It was also a lot of fun. This is the kind of theatre company that actors tell other actors to work with."
Tom Reiff - actor - AEA member since 1992

"Marc and Pat Goldberg inspire and delight while introducing young audiences to the wonder of live theatre. It is always a pleasure and a privilege to be in one of their productions."
Bill Fitzpatrick - actor - AEA member since 2000

"Storybook Musical Theatre gave me my first professional job in theatre and the opportunity to join Equity. I was brought in as an over hire to help build the set and then spent the run of the show as an usher, but over the course of the past 15 years, I moved on to be a production assistant, master electrician, and then as an Equity stage manager. Marc and Pat Goldberg have always been supportive and encouraging. Storybook holds a very special place in Philadelphia Theatre and in the community. This company has introduced theatre to tens of thousands of children over the past 20 years and I'm glad I was even a small part of that experience."
Trish Troillo - actress, stage manager - AEA member since 2000

"Congratulations Storybook for remaining committed to being an AEA company during challenging times and for providing a wonderful, professional and fun environment for each cast you gather together. Here's to another 20!"
David Mulholland - actor, stage manager - AEA member since 1980

"I always felt fulfilled as an actor performing for Storybook. Although it's children's theater, the caliber of talent, the clever scripts and lyrical music that the company employs are delightful."
Denise Whelan - actress - AEA member since 1986

"Iíve worked with Storybook for long enough now to be cast this season in a repeat of my first show with them. These shows are a real kick to get up and running in a matter of days! Pat and Marc do a great job and are to be commended for keeping a TYA company going all these years. Iíve had a ball in all my Equity productions with Storybook, and have worked with some fine comedic actors. Thanks to Pat and Marc for making me part of their professional theater ďfamilyĒ".
Joyce Moody - actress - AEA member since 1979

"Storybook Musical Theatre has made it possible for me to work as an Equity actor and stage manager for 20 years. Over that period of time SMT has given many performers the opportunity to join AEA. In addition, thousands of children have had the experience of seeing live professional theater for the first time. For 20 years Storybook has remained a viable TYA company, and now begin their 21st year...quite an accomplishment!"
Dana Schmidt - actor, stage manager - AEA member since 1990
