Detroit Liaison Committee Gives Back!

Every year the Detroit Liaison Committee participates in the Adopt-A-Child at Christmas program. The Adopt-A-Child at Christmas is a program in the Detroit Metropolitan Area that helps disadvantaged children ages newborn to 12 years to receive warm clothes and toys for Christmas. The Adopted Parents present the gifts to the sponsored child at a special gala event the first week of December at the COBO Center in downtown Detroit. The gala event has food, entertainment, and arts & crafts activities for the children. This year the Chicago AEA staff participated with the Detroit Liaison Committee in collecting funds to purchase clothes and gifts to present to the child.

The Detroit Liaison Committee for the past 15 years has participated in fundraising for Equity & Friends Fights AIDS. Equity & Friends Fights AIDS is similar to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, but all funds raised by Equity & Friends stays in Southeast Michigan. "We began 15 years ago fundraising with our local SAG/AFTRA office," says Peggy Thorp, Detroit Liaison Committee Member and Central Region Board member, "Then our members began to participate, and the theatres and staff began fundraising, audience members began giving, and now we are "& Friends" to encompass all those that give in the greater Detroit Metropolitan Area." The money raised is given to two different service organizations, AIDS Partnership Michigan and Midwest AIDS coalition. "Fundraising begins every year on World AIDS Day and the funds are released in the early part of the following year," says Peggy, "The funds raised in 2009 where presented in February/March of 2010, and each organization received $7,500." Equity would like to wish the Detroit Liaison Committee the best of luck in their fundraising this season! .
