Eastern Reps at Annual Meeting

By Debra Cole
Area Liaison

The annual meeting of the Buffalo/Rochester membership was held on September 14, 2009 at Genessee Community College in Batavia, NY. Members were energized to have Senior Business Rep (soon to be Eastern Regional Director) Rick Berg there, along with Eastern staffer Ellen Carter, so that we could meet the Equity Business Rep who works with the developing theatres in the area.

A letter from Eastern Region Vice President Kate Shindle was read, congratulating members on the success of the Labor Day Parade float. She also encouraged us to continue to make our voices heard so that politicians and lawmakers take notice of Equity members.

AEA T-shirts were distributed so that our Union logo would be front and center as we manned the phones for an upcoming PBS fundraising drive on September 20. Liaison Committee member Ann Reid put up a PowerPoint visual showing us how to go online and vote for the Equity centennial postage stamp.

Members were told about the forthcoming Liaison city webpages and new hotline system that National Communications Director David Lotz has put so much effort into creating for all our areas. We applaud the fiscally responsible efforts the Union makes in establishing these communication systems.

Mr. Berg answered questions and concerns as we discussed the future of the Buffalo Special Agreement in these tough economic times. Studio Arena, the LORT theatre in Buffalo, has closed its doors, leaving GeVa as the only LORT theatre in our area.

The Members' Project Code was discussed as a way to showcase ourselves. Several participants at the meeting teach at an area university or community college and wanted more information about the Equity Membership Candidate programs for their students.

Finally, members were encouraged to think about more community volunteer projects.
