Earth Day 2008: Play Your Part
10 Ways You Can Save our Precious Planet
By AEA Member Nova Bergeron
- Reuse your individual plastic bottles. Even better, purchase a reusable bottle.
Every hour we use 2.5 million plastic bottles
It takes 1,000 years for plastic to decompose
Last year 22 billion bottles ended up in landfills.
- Use fabric bags when shopping. Or reuse your shopping bags.
When one ton of plastic bags is reused or recycled, the energy equivalent of 11 barrels of oil is saved.
- Use rechargeable batteries and recycle old batteries properly.
Improperly disposed battery dangers include:
Polluting the lakes and streams as the metals vaporize into the air when burned.
Contribute to heavy metals that potentially may leach from solid waste.
Expose the environment and water to lead and acid.
Find your local battery recycling location.
- Use a reusable coffee cup instead of the disposable paper cups.
The paper we throw away every year can build a 12 foot high wall stretching from New York to Los Angeles
Put a "no junk mail" sticker in your mail box to avoid extra paper waste
Recycle old newspapers to mulch and weed control your garden. Wet newspaper and place thickly on the garden. Cover with bark or stones.
When purchasing paper, be sure it is recycled paper. Think of all the beautiful trees you will save
- Recycle aluminum and glass.
We could build two skyscrapers with the glass we do not recycle.
We could rebuild our commercial airplanes in three months with the aluminum we do not recycle.
- Avoid excess packaging when shopping.
Buy cereal in a large box
Buy large packages of sugar and flour
Buy bottled in a large plastic jug instead of small bottles. Reuse the plastic jugs.
- Carpool whenever possible.
The US is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases worldwide.
Automobiles are the leading cause of America's air pollution crisis.
- Use Earth-Friendly cleaning products.
Avoid products containing chlorine, bleach, phosphate, sodium hypochlorite, or ingredients derived from petroleum.
- Shut off the lights!
Save energy by remembering to shut off lights, heating and cooling systems before leaving the house.
- Think Globally, Act Locally!
We can all do our part to save the earth.
Find your closest recycling center.
Love your Earth!
