Healing the Dancer

“Healing the Dancer” Support Group Starts 9/24

The Actors Fund launched its first support group specifically for dancers two months ago. The group addressed the emotional issues and complexities that are specific to dancers facing physical problems. Because of increasing interest in the dance community, The Fund will be hosting a second support group this fall.

The eight-week group will provide a safe and confidential arena for professional dancers to address not only the practical issues but also the emotional ramifications of not being able to dance due to physical problems. The group, led by a psychotherapist who is a former dancer, will meet weekly from September 24th through November 19th.

According to Actors Fund Social Worker Carol Harris-Mannes, who helped put the first dancer’s group together, “The group participants found that the support and understanding within the group gave them the courage to begin to make necessary changes and they all were quite gratified to have this resource.”

The support group is part of a new dance outreach effort spearheaded by Actors Fund trustee Bebe Neuwirth. “As dancers, we are good at dealing with the aches and strains associated with our profession” said Bebe. “Sometimes, though, we get an injury or develop a chronic problem that knocks us off our feet. I’d like to create a support system for other dancers.”
