Actors' Equity Updates LA's 99-Seat Plan

New Changes Include Easy-to-read Document Layout and Two Producer Categories

Actors' Equity Association has announced changes to the 99-Seat Plan, which will take effect August 15, 2006. These changes are based on extensive research conducted by the Union and are designed to strengthen the Plan, which is used in Los Angeles County. The research, done over a four-year period, was conducted in co-operation with ATLAS, the organization which represents the Producers. More than 1150 shows are produced under the 99 Seat Plan each year.

With a more user-friendly layout to the Plan document, changes include a stipend increase based on ticket pricing, size of house and which week of performances the show is in; a simpler Equity comp ticket policy and for the first time there is a cap on ticket prices. There is a new requirement for an individual other than an actor to be on book during the rehearsal period to allow for rehearsals to run smoothly and efficiently. Improvements have also been made to the safety language.

An important addition to the 99-Seat Plan is the inclusion of two Producer categories. One category, designated for veteran producers with no verified violations under the Plan, allows producers to use the current eight (8) weeks of rehearsal and 80 performances. New producers or producers with violations will be limited to six (6) weeks of rehearsal and 60 performances.

Actors' Equity Association (AEA or 'Equity'), founded in 1913, represents more than 45,000 Actors and Stage Managers in the United Stages. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions.
