Actors' Equity Foundation Announces 2005-2006 Theatre Grant Recipients

The Actors’ Equity Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2005-2006 Theater Grants. Given annually to not-for-profit theaters that show an ongoing commitment to producing and enhancing employment opportunities for stage actors and stage managers, the theaters have a wide range of financial and artistic profiles, and operate under various Equity contracts. This year, 63 theaters nationwide shared in more than $54,850.

In accordance with Equity’s geographic delineation into three regions, 30 theaters in the Eastern Region, including the New Federal Theatre, Walnut Street Theatre and Great Lakes Theater Festival, have been awarded grants. In the Central Region, 19 theatres are grant recipients, including Human Race Theatre, Purple Rose Theatre, St. Louis Black Repertory, and fourteen theatres in the Western Region, including Lyric Stage Company, Actors Theatre of Phoenix and Theatre Rhinoceros, have received grants. (A full list of theatres is attached).

“These theatres are important members of the Equity family,” said the Patrick Quinn, Equity’s President and a member of the governing board of the Foundation. “The theatres are also a vital part of the cultural and economic life of the communities in which they reside.”

Created in 1962 by the Union’s council, the Actors’ Equity Foundation was established when Second Vice President Paul Dullzell bequeathed monies to “be used for the general welfare of Actors.” The Foundation awards grants from two distinct funds - The Charitable Grants Fund, which is for welfare purposes only, and The General Fund, from which these theatre grants are awarded. Each year, the Foundation also administers a variety of awards for outstanding performances by Equity members.
