15th Annual Ovation Awards Honor Equity Actors, Theatre in Los Angeles

The 15th Annual Ovation Awards took place on Monday, November 14th at the Orpheum theatre in downtown Los Angeles. Sponsored by the LA Stage Allliance, the Ovation Awards are Southern California's premiere awards for excellence in theatre. This year's glamorous black-tie event honored a number of Equity actors, productions and theatres with over 20 awards in a variety of categories.

The "Best Actor" and "Best Featured" actor nods went to Equity members Robert Mandan (THE CARETAKER), Chris Butler (YELLOWMAN), Deidrie Henry (YELLOWMAN), Kristine Remigio (MISS SAIGON), Marcelo Tubert (SAN FRAN SCAPIN), Fran Bennett (MERCHANT OF VENICE), Harrison White (PURLIE), and Anika Noni Rose (CAROLINE, OR CHANGE). Ms. Rose previously won Equity's Clarence Derwent Award for her powerful portrayal on Broadway.

KILLER JOE, a production of the Lost Angels Theatre Company, garnered Best Ensemble, Best Direction, Best Sound and Best "Intimate" Theatre production. Featured in the ensemble were Equity members Joe Sikora and Paul Dillon. THE PARIS LETTER, which was mounted by the Center Theatre Group at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, drew the award for Best World Premiere. Equity cast members included Neil Patrick Harris, Lawrence Pressman, Josh Radnor, Ron Rifkin and Patricia Wettig.

Equity actor Julia Sweeney won the Ray Sticklyn Memorial Award for Best Solo Performance, in LETTING GO OF GOD. The James A. Doolittle Award for Leadership in the Theatre went to Luis Alfaro. A special Community Outreach Award went to the Shakespeare Festival/LA.
