Actors’ Equity To Assist Tacoma Actors Guild With New Agreement

Actors’ Union Partners with TAG, Bellevue Civic Theatre to Keep Theatre Alive

Actors’ Equity has agreed to assist the Tacoma Actors Guild (TAG) in the theatre’s battle to remain open.

At its meeting on January 11, 2005, Equity’s Western Regional Board approved concessions to TAG’s collective bargaining agreement for the next two years. The special agreement allows the Bellevue Civic Theatre (BCT), a nearby theatre company, to produce shows for TAG while TAG’s Board restructures its operation and tackles an estimated $350,000 debt.

According to Equity Western Regional Director John Holly, “For over 20 years, TAG has been one of the Pacific Northwest’s most important Equity theatres, employing hundreds of local Equity actors and stage managers. Equity is committed to working with TAG and the BCT during this transition, protecting union jobs while allowing TAG and BCT to produce shows at reduced costs.” Holly noted that Equity has over 400 members in the Seattle area. The new agreement will go into effect following TAG/BCT's upcoming production of SLEUTH, which will be on a Equity Guest Artist Agreement.

Actors’ Equity and the TAG acknowledged the Bellevue Civic Theatre for leading the charge in the theatre community by providing financial and personnel support during the transition.

“It is the hope of Equity and TAG that fundraising efforts and public support of TAG productions will be successful in reducing their debt,” added Holly. “All three organizations pledge to work together to help TAG rebuild for the future.”
