“AWESOME 80s PROM” Show Under Equity Contract at Webster Hall

As part of Equity’s expanded organizing efforts, an Equity agreement was negotiated for the AWESOME 80s PROM, an interactive, audience participation style show in the tradition of Tony & Tina’s Wedding at Webster Hall. Created and directed by Ken Davenport, the retro revue takes audiences back to the year 1989, with 80s pop music and a cast of 19 performers who portray a high school locker-full of characters at a Senior Class Prom.

The production began a limited run in July without an Equity contract, which led to an organizing drive by Equity’s National Director, Organizing, Flora Stamatiades, Senior Business Representative Rick Berg and Business Representative Kathy Mercado. The show, which resumed performances on Friday, September 13th, is operating under Equity’s Cabaret Contract, which is designed for a flexible performance schedule (one show per week has been announced) in venues with cabaret-style seating and bar service. Per performance minimums and pension contributions are part of the agreement.

“Performers should always check with Equity before accepting employment in a live performance situation,” reminded Stamatiades. “It almost every instance, there is an appropriate union contract.”
