Members Discuss Umbrella Contract in Austin, TX

Over 40 members and several Membership Candidates attended a meeting and reception at Don Toner's Austin Playhouse in Austin, Texas on October 25, 2005. A number of local producers and talent agents also were on hand.

Bill McMillin, Area Liaison and Stage Manager Councillor from the Western Region, gave a progress report on the Committee's work over the last year. He also provided an overview of the Equity theatres and contracts available in the area, and distributed over 25 handouts with material about the union obtained mainly from the AEA website. There was a brief description of the Membership Candidate Program and the AEA Student Handbook was available.

A discussion of the Region's Umbrella Theatres and producers and Special Appearance Agreements topped the agenda. The Austin Circle of Theatres is the official AEA producer of record for the Umbrella Agreement and also is an AEA approved Paymaster. To date, there are over 22 theatres, producers or companies that have either used the Umbrella and/or Special Appearance Agreements, or are in negotiations with or beginning application to the Western Region's appropriate Business Representatives to work under these agreements.

There were also reports on the Liaison Committee's participation in the AIDS WALK in Austin, the AFL-CIO fish fry, Equity's health insurance plan and the working dues increase.

The Austin/San Antonio Area is comprised of over 175 members and 114 Membership Candidates. Equity contracted theatres include Greater Tuna Corp. (Production Contract), The State Theatre (SPT Category 7), Zachary Scott Theatre Center (SPT Category 4), Austin Playhouse (SPT Category 1) Austin Shakespeare Festival (SPT Category 1) and St. Edward's University's Mary Moody Northern Theatre (URTA and Guest Artist).

The next scheduled membership meeting is February 1. Western Regional Vice President Doug Carfrae and Western Regional Director John Holly are scheduled to attend. Executive Director Alan Eisenberg is tentatively planning to attend. They will also be visiting Dallas on January 30 and Houston on January 31.
