For His ‘Gypsy Robe’ Moment, Ron Todorowski Reflects on the Past to Keep Himself Present

A Historic 60-Year Backstage Tradition on Broadway

With a warm hug from his director Diane Paulus, and love from fellow actors Matthew Morrison, Kelsey Grammer, Laura Michelle Kelly and the full company, Ron Todorowski beamed with joy as he was presented with the Gypsy Robe for his seventh Broadway chorus show, Finding Neverland. (This brand-new musical from the Weinstein Company also boasts AEA member and “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston as one of its producers.)

Backstage, the tears flowed and the emotions palpable as Finding Neverland marks the Broadway debut for eight members of Equity.

As they say in Neverland, “Believe!”

“The Gypsy Robe tradition embodies – and acknowledges – the hard work it takes by those in the chorus to forge a career on Broadway. I genuinely felt the love and support from my colleagues when I was presented the robe onstage. During the ceremony, I recall the welcoming of past robe recipients. It was such a thrill to hear that one of my fellow AEAers had received the robe in the 1979 revival of Peter Pan when it was mounted in my current Broadway home at the Lunt-Fontanne!” - Ron Todorowski

Professional Training “As a kid, I trained in dance and acrobatics with Marie Lynn Varchulik and Mark Marino in Canonsburg, PA. The summer after graduating high school, I auditioned for the Hamburg, Germany production of Cats and got the job. Following Cats, I moved to New York City and took classes at places like Steps and Broadway Dance Center. Some directors and choreographers that have made an impact in my artistic growth are Twyla Tharp, Franco Dragone, Mia Michaels, Wayne Cilento, David Parsons, Gabriele Barre, Mark Dendy, Des McAnuff and Diane Paulus.”
Year Joined AEA 1998
How I Got My Equity Card “I earned my Equity card when I made my Broadway debut in Footloose.”
