AEA Urges Members Nationwide to Sign the Chicago Culture Counts Petition

Do you care about culture in Chicago? Our theatres, poetry slams, and film festivals. Our museums and galleries. Our dance companies. Our orchestras and music clubs?

For the first time in 25 years, Chicago is creating a plan to support the arts and artists throughout the city. This is an important step if we want culture to thrive in every neighborhood and every school.

But to transform the plan into real policy wins for the arts and arts education, it will take more than just pioneering ideas. It will take the broad support of AEA members and arts supporters nationwide who care about culture -- people like you.

To build that base of support, ACTORSí EQUITY has joined the Culture Counts coalition, an alliance of organizations that believe the arts are what make Chicago great.

The last time the city created a cultural plan was 25 years ago under the administration of Mayor Harold Washington. It was filled with forward-thinking ideas that shaped the arts in Chicago today -- from a city-funded grant program for the arts, to the downtown theatre district, and arts groups in residence at Chicago parks.

Now it's time to adopt a new vision and new strategies for culture in Chicago. What we do today will shape what the arts look like decades from now.

Your signature lets elected officials and city leaders know the arts are what make Chicago great. The more signatures we get, the more we show the arts are a political force that cannot be ignored. And the more likely it is that the cultural plan will become a reality.

In early May -- in advance of the final cultural plan this fall -- the city will release a "State of Culture" report. The Culture Counts coalition is activating 3,000 people to speak out before then.

Will you be one of them?

Join us in showing your support for arts and culture in Chicago and a bold sustainable cultural plan for the city.
