Denver's Annual Henry Awards

By: Rachel Fowler, Denver Area Liaiosn Committee

The who's who of Denver Theatre congregated to celebrate this past season with the 6th Annual Henry Awards, sponsored by AEA and presented at the Stage Theatre of the DCPA on July 18, 2011.

It was a big night for The Denver Center, taking eight awards, including Best Season by a company. Kim Staunton and Pun Bandhu, both AEA, took Best Actress ("Ruined") and Best Supporting Actor ("The Catch") for their work.

Another AEA member, Stephen Day, walked with Best Supporting Actor in a musical for "Sunset Boulevard" at the Arvada Center.

Steve Wilson won for Best Director of a Musical for PHAMALy's "Beauty and The Beast", his second consecutive win. Jake Walker took Best Actor for his work in Paragon Theatre's "The Pride", Nick Sugar walked away with Best Actor in a Musical for The Avenue's "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", and Megan Van De Hay took Best Actress in a musical for Vintage Theatre's "Grey Gardens".

Buntport's "Kafka on Ice" won Best Direction, Outstanding Ensemble, and Best Supporting Actress, Erin Rollman.

The evening included performances from Colorado Shakespeare Festival's "Romeo and Juliet", Town Hall's "Rent" (which won Best Musical), and PHAMALy's "Beauty and the Beast", and four special awards, including a lifetime achievement award to Joey Wishnia and Outstanding Fight Direction to Geoff Kent. (Maybe next year they will give an award to an outstanding stage manager?)

While the voting process still seems to be in question, it was a festive and intimate show, with high profile presenters that included Denver Center's Artistic Director Kent Thompson, and AEA 1st Vice President, Paige Price.
