New Orleans Holds First EMC/AEA Info Meeting

By John Bostic, New Orleans Liaison Chair

On Tuesday, March 22, 2011 the New Orleans Liaison EMC Sub-committee hosted its first Equity Membership Candidate (EMC) meeting. It was held at The La Nuit Comedy Theater and as with any New Orleans gathering there was food and drink for all! The primary purpose was to meet and support local EMC's and educate the New Orleans Community about the EMC Program and Equity in general.

Topics of discussion were AEA history, how and when to join and benefits of membership. Further, the specifics of being an EMC were clarified. (Thanks in great part to Lynne Creighton from Equity's Membership Department in Chicago.) The EMC program permits actors and stage managers in training to credit theatrical work in certain Equity theatres towards eventual membership in Equity. Candidates must complete 50 creditable weeks of work at any of the participating theatres. Weeks can be accumulated for both rehearsal and performance; they do not have to be consecutive, and may be accumulated over any length of time.

Members of any performing arts sister union e.g. SAG, AFTRA, AGMA, AGVA would normally be required to sign an Equity contract when working in Equity's jurisdiction. However, you may request a waiver of your professional status in order to train for the theatre. This allows you to work as an EMC for 25 weeks.

You must complete the EMC Registration Form each time you accrue weeks with a participating theatre.

For more information on the EMC program, check out the EQUITY MEMBERSHIP CANDIDATE PROGRAM OVERVIEW & THEATRE LIST located under the EMC link in the Document Library on the Equity website. Or contact Susan Cramm, EMC Administrator for Equity's Central Region at 312-641-0393 ext 244 or by email at scramm@actorsequity.org For EMC questions outside the Central Region please contact your Regional Equity office.

Attending EMC's received informational handouts as well as EMC buttons. John Bostic, Area Liaison, ran the meeting with support from Liaison Committee members Meredith Long, Edward Cox, Cathie Choppin and members Donna Duplantier, J Patrick McNamara and Peggy Walton-Walker as well as EMC Vatican Lokey. Also in attendance was producer Dennis Assaf who has utilized the EMC program for several years and was able to speak about it from a Producer's viewpoint.

Additional topics of discussion were upcoming events in the NOLA area; goals for the community at large and battling rehearsals, holidays and the post-Mardi Gras activities.

The meeting was open to everyone in the theatre community with 25 Equity Members, EMC's and guests in attendance.
