Pride and Solidarity in Action Forum for New York City Union Members

New York City Committee of Pride in Our Union and Empire State Pride Agenda are pleased to present: Best Practices in Health Benefits. Panelists will discuss domestic partner, marriage recognition and transgender inclusion. This panel will feature:

• Nicole Aniello, New York City Carpenters Union Local 926 member

• Scott Krywanczyk, public school teacher, UFT member

• James Staley, Chair of the Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Committee, Local 010, CSEA (New York City)

Two-Way Solidarity. Panelists will highlight how the LGBT community supports labor movement struggles for social and economic justice; and how union solidarity supports LGBT equality and justice. This panel will feature:

• Retail Action Project Organizer Phil Andrews and retail campaign worker, RWDSU

• Rona Freiser, UFT Queens Boro Representative (Queens)

And a break out session, Navigating Challenging Discussions on Diversity with members of the Pride in the Pulpit People of Color Committee; NYS AFL-CIO Community Outreach staffer; and SEIU 1199 Education staffer. Participants can share how LGBT activists and union members can navigate challenging conversations with co-workers on faith-based objections to LGBT rights and inclusion. This session will feature:

• Danny Jimenez, SEIU 1199 UHE, Education and Development Department Staff (New York)

• Neil Kirby, Chairperson of the Political Action Committee, Local 010 of CSEA, Region II (New York City)

• Fareed Michelen, Community Liaison, NYS AFL-CIO (Albany)

• Jeff Oshins, Local 375 Delegate and Co-Chair, Labor and Political Action Committee (New York)

Participants will also have input into the Pride in Our Union Action Plan for 2010.
