Chanhassen: The Prequel

"If you build it, they will come…" Thus, a cornfield in Iowa now boasts a baseball field. Similarly, the cornfields 20 miles from the Twin Cities metro area was the unlikely choice for the birth of Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this fall, it testifies, too, that "If you sing it," well…attendance has topped eight million guests, and counting.
Founders Herb and Carol Bloomberg, whose mutual passion for Broadway musicals launched the unlikely 600-seat dinner theatre in this sleepy farming town of 500, weren't babes in the boonies, after all. Its immediate success prompted the addition of three more adjacent stages with complete costume and set shops on the premises.
They said it couldn't be done, but as the years ticked by, proving otherwise, Chanhassen has emerged as the largest professional dinner theatre in the nation (it's also the largest privately-owned restaurant in the state) and the largest employer of professional, Equity card-carrying actors in the Midwest.
When it came time to pass the torch in 1989, the Bloombergs entrusted their baby to entertainment entrepreneur Thomas K. Scallen. By this time, those nay-sayers had learned a new whine: Dinner Theatres are dinosaurs, dying faster than you can say "OKLAHOMA!"
Scallen knew all that, recounts his son, Tommy Scallen, who consults for the organization. "He saw its strength as a strong local acting company" spurred by new Artistic Director Michael Brindisi, who'd signed on in 1988. "My father's philosophy was, 'If you've got a good brand, perfect it-don't break it.'" In other words, the shows must go on.
But dinner was another matter. Serving 1,200 guests a night in a 90-minute window presents a mammoth challenge in itself, and we're talking steaks grilled to order, not Mystery Newburg from a warming pan. Yet Scallen made it his mandate to upgrade the fare. As Tommy explains it, "For many folks attending, this may be the nicest place they'll ever eat," so make it as memorable as what's on the other side of the footlights. Plus, he dusts off another of his dad's maxims: "The show starts in the parking lot. You've got to follow through with a total quality experience."

Chanhassen Dinner Theatres’ 42ND STREET
Well, by putting yourself on the line and directing a production-as-audition. Brindisi chose Noel Coward's witty PRIVATE LIVES for the intimate Fireside Theatre, which led to a second tryout, a huge mainstage show called EDWIN DROOD (it flopped at the box office, but the critics loved it), followed by 42ND STREET, which, he reports, was "really solid, really well-received." Since this past season he directed his third 42ND STREET for Chan, it's clear he passed the test.
What isn't so obvious is why, 20 years later, he still can't wait to get to work each day. "I love musicals, especially those with a book-driven story," the artist confesses his addiction. In collaboration with producer Scallen, "We look for a show that will sell, but also offer the opportunity to deliver a high standard of quality," he explains.
"I never underestimate the audience," Michael insists. "They're really smart and will go wherever you take them. This is a very sophisticated theatre-going community, so our shows don't have to be stuffy." Darn right. Witness the recent hot and rockin' GREASE, which broke all box office records.
"The idea that dinner theatre is for old folks is a stereotype," he continues. "I look at each night's audience and see all ages, all persuasions." Sure, he'll continue to please them with FIDDLER and OKLAHOMA!, but just as often (nowadays, even more often) shake up the mix with something like HAIRSPRAY or MAMMA MIA!, being considered for future staging, or THE PRODUCERS.
Adds Tommy Scallen, "Just like Broadway has changed, so has our demographic, and so has the subject matter; you can take more risks." RENT started the ball rolling, he believes.
Both agree it pays off to foster a core company of local talent, both onstage and behind it. Explains Michael, "In rehearsal, people who've worked well together can get right down to business. And, it's family. It's all about collaboration when you have a resident company. It's more than a paycheck. It's the atmosphere. Relationships. Plus, they love it because we can offer longevity; they're working 52 weeks of the year." Yet, to inject necessary freshness, Michael auditions for new blood, too.
For many, it's home. For others, it's an ideal chance to show what you can do and possibly be picked up elsewhere, like Laura Aspness, who rocketed from Chanhassen's GREASE to the Broadway production.
Veteran Chan actor Tony Vierling got his first break by being cast in A CHORUS LINE way back when. And he's delighted to perform here regularly because of "the quality of what they do. Even with a traditional show, Michael puts a different spin on it. He's definitely someone who goes to the heart of a story, not just the glitz and sparkle. Plus, I love the 'family' atmosphere. And," he adds, "it's such a steady job."
As payback, it allows him to serve as role model for young, aspiring local talent. In rehearsal for LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, where he's currently appearing at the Guthrie, a 20-year old cast member gushed, "I've seen you in everything you've done at Chanhassen."
Also nurturing that next generation of talent are the summer theatre camp for kids and the performance training classes for teens and adults instituted by Scallen. As his son, Tommy, confesses, "In high school, I was scared to death to get involved in theatre; my friends would have crucified me. But now, with these classes, which build confidence as well as skills, even the football players are signing up."
Still, the standard joke he tells is, "How do you get young people to a dinner theatre? Answer: Wait till they get old." That's precisely why others across the country are going dark. In one of its ventures to prove that old saw wrong, Chanhassen is actively seeking out a broader range of younger patrons. In fact, it launched its first Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Night on October 23 during the run of THE PRODUCERS, offering complimentary appetizers and discounted drinks and tickets and a chance to schmooze. Says Tommy, "A huge portion of our audience, and our employees, are gay, and in Minneapolis, GLBTs are a significant part of our community."
