IMPORTANT! Members Living in New York City

The New York City Council is currently considering a bill (known as Intro 650) which would require permits for the use of devices that monitor chemical, biological and radiological air pollutants. The bill is purportedly aimed at reducing false alarms of terrorist attacks. However, it goes far beyond its stated intent and gives the New York City Police Department (NYPD) expansive powers that could limit the freedom of individuals or organizations to engage in environmental monitoring without undue interference. If passed into law, Intro 650 will have a chilling effect on all environmental testing, making it harder for us to obtain reliable air testing results.

This is critical to Equity members working in New York City. Equity staff use test equipment to monitor and control the use of chemical smoke and fog on our stages and we also test for mold and other allergens backstage and in dressing rooms. Likewise, our colleagues in film and television do a great deal of environmental testing of film locations. Our ability to protect members in the workplace could be severely limited by this bill.

Please send an email to your City Council Member* saying "Please vote NO to Intro 650". You can elaborate if you wish by saying that you work in the entertainment industry and rely on your union's ability to test the workplace for environmental hazards. You should also give your street address so the Council Member knows you're a constituent.

*Click here to go to the Council website and find your Council Member:, enter your street address and borough to get to your Council Member's page. Then scroll down to find the email link.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to send this important message to your City Council Member.
