Brava Little Sally !

Jennifer Cody Garners Gypsy Robe in SHREK THE MUSICAL

Jennifer Cody

Jennifer Cody is the latest recipient of Equity's coveted Gypsy Robe for SHREK THE MUSICAL.

Recreating a time-honored tradition that began more than 50 years ago, the Robe was presented to Ms. Cody - known for her wry comments as URINETOWN'S Little Sally at numerous BC/EFA events - on opening night at the Broadway Theatre. The Robe was presented to her by PAL JOEY robe recipient Eric Sciotto.

Colorfully decorated with appliqués from other Broadway musicals, the Gypsy Robe is given to the chorus member with the most Broadway musical chorus credits. Ms. Cody has appeared on Broadway in THE PAJAMA GAME, TABOO, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, CATS, SEUSSICAL, and URINETOWN, where she previously received the robe.

The Gypsy Robe ceremony began as the cast and crew gathered onstage just before curtain and formed a large circle. Equity's National Chorus Business Representative David Westphal welcomed everyone and introduced AEA Executive Director John P. Connolly and First Vice President Paige Price. Mr. Westphal then asked company members who were making their Broadway debut to come forward, where they exuberantly posed for the cameras!

Next, Gypsy Robe volunteer Terry Marone invited past recipients of the robe to be acknowledged, including Bill Nable, Brian O'Brien, Richie Mastascusa, Lisa Gadja, Amber Stone, and Dennis Stowe.

Eric described the Robe's illustrious history and the rules for the ceremony: each new recipient must circle the stage three times counter-clockwise and visit everyone's dressing room to receive the robe's blessing. He then proclaimed the newest robe recipient: Jennifer Cody.

Jennifer dashed into center stage, hugged Eric and eagerly donned the garment. Everyone applauded and reached out to touch the robe as she circled the stage. SHREK was now "blessed" by the iconic Gypsy Robe.

Ms. Cody was also appointed as a Chorus Councillor at Actors' Equity on Tuesday December 16.
