Talking Theatre Casting Director Series Is Big Hit

By Richard Ostlund, Executive Associate, Western Region

Casting Director Amy Lieberman and Western Councillor Ned Schmitdke

Casting Director Amy Lieberman (La Jolla, Ensemble Theatre Company, Santa Barbara, Reprise) drew a Standing Room Only audience to the Western Membership Education Committee's Talking Theatre event in the new Hollywood Boulevard office on June 30, 2008.

"Thank you so much for offering these theatre casting director conversations. What a great opportunity Actors' Equity has provided its members. Your efforts to serve the members really are appreciated," wrote Amanda Pajer, a proud Equity member since 2003.

"What a wonderful evening. Thank you for organizing this and the future seminars. The staff at Equity was so great as well. A treat! What a wonderful way to start my, hopefully long and fulfilling, journey with Equity," wrote Isabella Way, an EMC who attended.

Amy Lieberman kept the crowd enthralled for two hours as she shared her many stories about casting theatre in Los Angeles. She encouraged the members to always take something positive away from an audition-even if the audition didn't go well. During the Q and A portion of the evening, Ms. Lieberman unified the actors through humor with her list of what to do and, most importantly, what not to do at an audition. Many members told their personal "horror stories" about auditioning and the lighthearted commentary from Ms. Lieberman helped all those present feel that "they are not alone when it comes to messing up at an audition."

It was very exciting to see so many members energized and taking an active part in the camaraderie of the Los Angeles theatre community.

Member Carole Ruggier wrote: "Thank you to you and all your colleagues who helped put together this series. I enjoyed the evening very much as well as getting to know a little about Casting Director Amy Lieberman. I also appreciated the atmosphere, sharing a room with fellow Equity members. There's something very positive about that when you live in a town that isn't so kind to talent. Looking forward to the next one and once again-thanks."

At the end of the evening Councillor Joe Ruskin congratulated Membership Education Committee Chair Ned Schmidtke on the evening's great success. As they left the room, everyone was looking forward to the next Casting Director event coming up on July 21 featuring Samantha Barrie from the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.
