Seminar Focuses on Tips, Techniques For Successful Musical Theatre Auditions

Kimberly Vaughn

The Eastern Region Membership Education Committee hosted a seminar on September 27, 2007 entitled Tips & Techniques to Craft Your Successful Musical Theatre Audition. It was presented by Equity member and teacher Kimberly Vaughn. Eastern Region Membership Education Committee Chair Thomas J. Miller welcomed members to the first Outreach event of the 2007-2008 season and reminded them that Equity hosts career development seminars and events free of charge as a benefit of union membership.

Ms. Vaughn has extensive experience as an actor, director, producer and teacher. Through demonstrations, examples, and Q & A she covered many elements key to achieving a successful audition.

Topics addressed in the seminar included:

  • Grounding and balancing techniques
  • Movement intelligence - what your body language and gestures communicate
  • Meet & Greet material - what works and why
  • Interaction with Auditioners and Accompanists
  • Wardrobe and the importance of color
  • Resumes that work

The importance of preparation and process was emphasized throughout the evening, along with the need to be energized and grounded in order to achieve the vitality necessary for a meaningful audition. An audition should be equated as a performance - not as a measure of self-validation; take full advantage of a mistake or a misstep to show another element of your personality. In the realm of wardrobe and color, Ms. Vaughn covered the nonverbal impact, subtleties and meaning of specific colors.

Members were asked to complete an Exit Survey and the responses were overwhelmingly positive and the seminar received the highest ratings.

Mr. Miller said the Eastern Region Membership Education Committee plans to host more seminars of this type in the future. Watch Equity News and the Equity website for upcoming events.
