Michelle Kittrell is the latest recipient of Equity's colorful Gypsy Robe, for LEGALLY BLONDE, the new Broadway musical directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. The colorful garment was presented to Michelle on opening night (Sunday, April 29, 2007) at the Palace Theatre, recreating a time-honored tradition that began over 50 years ago.

Lavishly decorated with mementos from recent Broadway musicals, the robe is given to the cast member with the most Broadway chorus credits. Michelle has previously performed in eight Broadway musicals, including HAIRSPRAY, ALL SHOOK UP, URBAN COWBOY, SEUSSICAL, SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, FOOTLOOSE, GREASE! and WONDERFUL TOWN.

AEA Second VP Jean-Paul Richard welcomed the cast, crew, friends and producers to the ceremony, and gave best wishes on behalf of Equity President Mark Zimmerman and Executive Director John P. Connolly. Mr. Richard then introduced Robe Guardian Angel Terry Marone who conducted the ceremony. Also observing were Equity Councillor Thomas Jay Miller, Communications Director David Lotz, and Robe Historian Gloria Rosenthal.

Eleven former robe recipients stepped into the circle to be introduced, including: Paul Castree (HIGH FIDELITY), Eileen Casey (MARILYN), Austin Colyer (SINGIN' IN THE RAIN), Jack Dabdoub (SHOWBOAT), Pi Douglass (SELLING OF THE PRESIDENT, JC SUPERSTAR, THE WIZ), David Eggers (CURTAINS), Emily Hsu (BELLS ARE RINGING, SPAMALOT), Richard Korthaze (HOW TO SUCCEED…, DANCIN'), Krysta Rodriguez (SPRING AWAKENING), and Brynn Williams (IN MY LIFE). Director/Choreographer Jerry Mitchell remarked that he received the robe for THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES on this very stage. Then, Brian O'Brien, the most recent recipient of the robe for THE PIRATE QUEEN, described the history of the robe before announcing the winner: Michelle Kittrell.

Kittrell, who received the robe in URBAN COWBOY and ALL SHOOK UP, excitedly donned the garment and circled the stage three times before visiting each dressing room to bestow the robe's "blessings."

Also an Equity Chorus Councillor, Michelle is LEGALLY BLONDE's Co-Dance Captain (with Rusty Mowery) and blogs "Diary Of A Dance Captain" for Equity's website.
