Broadway Bids Fond Farewell To a Friend
Over 1,200 friends, family and colleagues packed the house at the St. James Theatre on March 26, 2007 to celebrate the life of former Equity President and Executive Director-designee, Patrick Quinn. Speakers included Equity Executive Director John P. Connolly and Equity President Mark Zimmerman, friends for more than 30 years; Susie Duff and Jack Magradey, longtime friends and former roommates; John Quinn, one of Patrick's brothers; Jim Wilhelm, Patrick's friend and agent and Anne Hathaway, who had known Patrick since childhood. Ann Harada sang "Time Heals Everything," accompanied by Evans Haile, Artistic Director of the Cape Playhouse; AEA Councillor Dana Ivey performed a scene from OUR TOWN; Chita Rivera spoke (via video) about Patrick on video and Rebecca Luker sang "Remember," accompanied by Steve Marzullo and Clay Ruede. Other speakers included Patrick's long time assistant, Anne Fortuno, who announced the creation of the Patrick Quinn Award for Distinguished Service to Actors to recognize untiring service to actors in order to better their lives. Also speaking was New York City Council Member Gale Brewer, who presented one of three official proclamations honoring Patrick's contributions. Brian Stokes Mitchell spoke of his camaraderie with Patrick and sang "The Impossible Dream" from MAN OF LA MANCHA. Then, to close the program, Patrick's partner, Marty Casella, spoke movingly and introduced a clip of Patrick singing "Lullabye of Broadway" in 42ND STREET---a piece that summed up Patrick's feelings about the theatre, his life and career. Scott Barnes, a former Councillor, produced the event with sensitivity and love. His plan had been to make Patrick the star of his Memorial, and by using photos, clips of Patrick's commercial, television and theatre appearances, he was able to accomplish this goal. A reception for family and friends followed the service. Patrick's three brothers and his sister wrote afterwards, conveying their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Equity and all of Patrick's colleagues for the moving and memorable tribute to their brother. They expressed deep gratitude for the kindness and thoughtfulness and appreciation of Patrick that was so evident at the event.
