110 IN THE SHADE Gypsy Robe Awarded to Devin Richards

Lonny Price, Carla Duren, and Devin Richards
Walter McBride/Retna

Devin Richards is the last recipient of Equity's Gypsy Robe for this season, for 110 IN THE SHADE, the Broadway revival directed by Lonny Price and with music by Harvey Schmidt. The vibrant garment was presented by Devin Richards on opening night (Wednesday, May 9, 2007) at Studio 54, recreating a time-honored tradition that began over 50 years ago.

Lavishly decorated with mementos from recent Broadway musicals, the robe is given to the cast member with the most Broadway chorus credits. Devin has previously performed in eight Broadway musicals, including JC SUPERSTAR, VICTOR/VICTORIA, THE LIFE, SEUSSICAL, WONDERFUL TOWN, THE PAJAMA GAME, SMOKEY JOE'S CAFÉ and CAROUSEL.

Gypsy Robe Director Terry Marone welcomed the cast, crew, friends and producers to the ceremony, and also introduced Equity's Executive Director John P. Connolly, President Mark Zimmerman and Second Vice President Jean-Paul Richard. Also, observing were Equity Eastern Regional Director Carol Waaser, Councillor Thomas Jay Miller, Robe Historian Gloria Rosenthal, and Communications Associate Nicole Yanolatos.

Five former robe recipients stepped into the circle to be introduced, including: Eileen Casey (MARILYN), Jack Dabdoub (SHOWBOAT), Pi Douglass (SELLING OF THE PRESIDENT, JC SUPERSTAR, THE WIZ), David Eggers (Curtains), Brian O'Brien (THE PIRATE QUEEN) and Terry Violino (ILLYA DARLING). Then Graham Rowat, the most recent recipient for LOVEMUSIK!, recited the history of the robe before announcing the winner: Devin Richards. Devin proudly donned the robe and circled the stage three times before visiting each dressing room to bestow the robe's "blessings."

Thanks everyone for another great Gypsy Robe season. See you in June for the next season kickoff with the opening of the new Broadway musical XANADU at the Helene Hayes Theatre.
