Nine Theatres Receive Kevin Kline Awards

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (LORT) dominated the evening with 18 wins at the second annual Kevin Kline Awards presentation on March 26, 2007. Repertory Theatre of St. Louis received 18 Kevins for four separate productions. The Rep's Off-Ramp production of URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL was the evening's big winner, earning seven Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical. The Rep's world premiere of the musical ACE received six Awards, including Outstanding New Play or Musical, and the Rep's staging of the one-man play, I AM MY OWN WIFE, received three Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Play. In addition, THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS - THE MUSICAL! earned two Awards.

In all, 23 Kevin Kline Awards were bestowed in 22 categories (the voting in the Outstanding Costume Design category resulted in a tie). Sponsored by the Professional Theatre Awards Council, the Awards honor theatre achievement in St. Louis.

In addition to The Rep, Kevin Kline Awards also went to HotCity Theatre, (SPT, Special Appearance) for POLISH JOKE and THE PROBE: AN INQUIRY INTO THE METEORIC RISE AND SPECTACULAR FALL OF ORSON WELLES IN HOLLYWOOD, which HotCity produced in conjunction with Theatre de la Belle Bete; New Jewish Theatre (Special Appearance) for FROM DOOR TO DOOR; the Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis (LOA to LORT) for JULIUS CAESAR, and Stages St. Louis (TYA Per Performance) for YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN.

The gala ceremony was hosted by former St. Louisan and Equity member Ken Page, and presenters included veteran Equity member Edmund Lyndeck.

Acting Awards went to Equity members Jim Butz, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play (JULIUS CAESAR, Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis); Equity Membership Candidate Donna Weinsting, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play (FROM DOOR TO DOOR, New Jewish Theatre); Arnie Burton, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play (I AM MY OWN WIFE, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis); Sandie Rosa, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical (URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL); Joneal Joplin, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical (URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL), and Jayne Paterson, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical (URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL).
