Healing the Dancer Seminar Hosted by Bebe Neuwirth

Monday, May 21
Community Room of the Aurora Residence
475 West 57th Street

On Monday, May 21, dancer Bebe Neuwirth will host a panel discussion on the on the unique emotional, physical and practical issues dancers face when addressing injuries. The seminar will be held in the community room of The Aurora Residence, 475 West 57th Street in New York.

The seminar will feature a panel of experts, including an orthopedic surgeon, a kinesiologist, a physical therapist and nutritionist, and a chiropractor, all of whom have extensive experience with dancers. This seminar is part of a series of seminars designed by Bebe Neuwirth in conjunction with The Actors Fund to support the dance community. They are an outgrowth of Bebe's personal experience as a long-time professional dancer.

"As dancers, we are good at dealing with the aches and strains associated with our profession" said Bebe. "Sometimes, though, we get an injury or develop a chronic problem that knocks us off our feet. Last year I had hip replacement surgery. It came after several years of physical therapy, arthroscopic surgery, and excruciating pain. Add to that the emotional stress of not being able to dance and not wanting people to know about my condition - and I think you understand what that prison is like. After the replacement I recognized how extremely lucky I was to have a great doctor and great support from the few people with whom I shared my secret. And so I'd like to create a support system for other dancers."

In addition to a seminars specifically designed for dancers, The Actors Fund will offer a support group for dancer dealing with injury or health concerns. In these groups, dancers will be able to safely and confidentially address the emotional issues and complexities that are specific to dancers facing physical problems.

"My hope," said Bebe, "is that this program will help us all keep dancing, stay healthy and enjoy our beautiful gift as long as we can."

In addition to Bebe Neuwirth, the May 21st seminar will be held from 4 - 6 pm and will include presenters Donald J. Rose, Attending Orthopedic Surgeon and Director of the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries and Director of Ambulatory Surgery at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases; Sandra Foschi, Physical Therapist and Certified Nutrition Specialist; Daniel White, DC, Chiropractor; and MariJeanne Liederbach, MSATC, MSPT, CSCS, Administrative Director and Director of Research and Education at The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries.

To register, please email dancers@actorsfund.org, or call 212-221-7300 x 261.

The seminar is being sponsored by The Actors Fund, Dance Theater Workshop, Dance NYC, The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, Career Transitions for Dancers, and Better Wellness and You.
