Manhattan Community Board Five Gives Thumbs Up to Actors’ Equity Corner

At its recent meeting, Manhattan Community Board Five voted to honor Actors’ Equity Association by designating the northeast corner of West 46th Street and Seventh Avenue “Actors’ Equity Corner.” The street co-name is in recognition of the many contributions the Union has made to the theatrical industry, to the Times Square area and to New York City.

In his testimony at the Board meeting, Equity Executive Director Alan Eisenberg said, “It is impossible to untangle Actors’ Equity members, famous or not, from the life, allure, mystique and genius of Broadway. It is impossible to untangle Broadway from the singularity that is New York City in the eyes of the world. Whether New York faces a transit strike, a national disaster or a nor’easter, we keep Broadway lit. We do it for the community in which we live, the tourists who visit our great City and we do it because theater is an important part of our American culture.”

A petition with more than 550 signatures was presented to the Board along with a dozen letters of support from prominent members of the theatrical community. Later this month, a formal recommendation will be sent to the local Council Member, Speaker Christine Quinn, for final approval. Look for a renaming later this spring.
