Nikki Renée Daniels is the newest recipient of Equity's legendary Gypsy Robe. The colorful garment was presented to Ms. Daniels backstage at the Broadhurst Theatre on opening night (Thursday, November 9, 2006) recreating the time-honored tradition that began over 50 years ago.

Lavishly decorated with mementos from recent Broadway musicals, the robe is given to the cast member with the most chorus credits. Nikki has appeared five Broadway musicals, including AIDA, NINE, LESTAT, THE LOOK OF LOVE and LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.

Equity Gypsy Robe Director Terry Marone began the ceremony by introducing several former recipients, including: Austin Colyer (SINGIN' IN THE RAIN), Harvey Evans (OKLAHOMA!), Pi Douglass (JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, THE WIZ, THE SELLING OF THE PRESIDENT), Richard Korthaze (DANCIN', HOW TO SUCCEED…), Eileen Casey (MARILYN), Terry Violino (ILYA, DARLING) and Merwin Foard (ASSASINS, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES).

William Ryall, who received the robe the night before at the opening of GRINCH, took center stage to tell about the history of the robe and announce the newest recipient: Nikki Renée Daniels! Ms. Daniels put on the flowing garment and circled the stage three times as each cast member touched the robe to receive its "blessing."

As an added surprise, Mr. Foard, who has appeared in three productions of LES MISERABLES, gave his original Broadway show jacket to Alexander Gemignani, who portrays Jean Valjean. Merwin and Alex worked together in ASSASINS and SWEENEY TODD.

Also participating in the ceremony were Chorus Councillors Tom Miller and Scott Watanabe, Communications Director David Lotz, and robe historian Gloria Rosenthal.
