Ramón Flowers, a chorus member in HOT FEET, is the newest recipient of Equity's legendary Gypsy Robe. The colorful garment was presented to Mr. Flowers during an exhilarating ceremony backstage at the Hilton Theatre on opening night (Sunday, April 30, 2006) recreating the time-honored tradition that began over 50 years ago.

Creatively decorated with mementos from recent Broadway musicals, the robe is given to the cast member with the most chorus credits. Ramón has done several Broadway shows, including: CATS, THE LION KING, and THE BOY FROM OZ.

Equity Gypsy Robe Director Terry Marone kicked off the ceremony by introducing an outstanding group of former robe recipients, including: Adrian Bailey (JELLYS LAST JAM, LEGS DIAMOND, and PRINCE OF CENTRAL PARK), Pi Douglass (JESUS CHRIST, SUPERSTAR, THE WIZ, and THE SELLING OF THE PRESIDENT), Robin Haynes (BLOOD BROTHERS), Wynonna Smith (THE THREE MUSKETEERS) and Tom Titone (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF).

Also present were Equity Chorus Councillor Tom Miller and Communications Assistant Nicole Yanolatos.

T. Oliver Reid, who garnered the robe in THE WEDDING SINGER, regaled the crowd with the cherished story of the Gypsy Robe's inception before enthusiastically proclaiming the newest recipient to be Ramón Flowers. Reid assisted Ramón in slipping on the robe and then he rounded the inside of the circle three times, according to Gypsy tradition, allowing for everyone in the cast to touch the robe for luck. Later, the winner visits the dressing rooms of all the cast members to bestow individual good luck "blessings" on their opening night.

Concluding the ceremony, Ms. Marone explained that a few of the Gypsy Robes are now prominently displayed at the Smithsonian Institute and the Museum of the City of New York. Another robe is on permanent display at the Equity Audition Center in New York City.
