Stage Managers Networking Event

First Ever Off Broadway Stage Managers Networking Event Held in NYC

The Eastern Region Stage Managers Committee and the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers held their first-ever Off Broadway Stage Managers Networking Event on June 19, 2006 in Equity's Council room in NYC. The four-hour event drew over 90 Stage Managers, and 13 Off Broadway producers, general managers and theatre owners.

According to Business Representatives Patrick Lee and Russell Lehrer, the event grew out of the 2005 Off Broadway negotiations as a way for Equity Stage Managers to make contact with Off Broadway League producers. During the event (which does not replace current EPA requirements), Equity members were able to meet face-to-face with producers and general managers to find out more about the theatres' stage managerial needs, upcoming schedules and best means of contact.

"For a first -time event of its kind, the turn-out was terrific," enthuses Councillor John Atherlay, who is the Chair of the Off Broadway Committee and the First Vice Chair of the Eastern Region Stage Managers Committee. "We have high hopes that this yearly event will expand the job search opportunities in the Off Broadway arena for our Stage Managers. It is also a unique opportunity for everyone involved to have the kind of relaxed conversations that result in a productive working relationship, now and in the future."

Among the theatre/producer participants were: Steve Bloom (Cesa Entertainment), Terry Byrne (Westside Theatre), Carol Fishman (producer), Roger Gindi (Gindi Theatrical Management), Michele Helberg (321 Management), Janio Marrero (Cherry Lane Theatre), Harry McFadden (NY Theatre Workshop), Jonathan Pollard (321 Theatrical Management), Brent Peek (Brent Peek Productions), Billy Russo (Playwrights Horizons), Tom Smedes (Martian Entertainment), Jamie Tyrol (Snug Harbor Productions), and Carl White (Martian Entertainment).

Many Stage Managers participated in the event, and the overall response was very positive. Equity Stage Manager Buzz Cohen said: "I approached this event as a networking opportunity, so it was very useful to meet and reconnect with potential employers. It was also beneficial to network with other stage managers for potential future projects."
