Romain Fruge Dons Equity's Legendary Gypsy Robe in THE THREEPENNY OPERA
![]() Robe Recipient Romain FrugeM Romain Fruge, a chorus member in THE THREEPENNY OPERA, is the latest chorus member to garner Equity's legendary Gypsy Robe. The colorful garment was presented to Mr. Fruge during a backstage ceremony at the Roundabout Theatre's Studio 54 on opening nigh (Thursday, April 20, 2006), recreating a time-honored tradition that began over 50 years ago. Lavishly decorated with mementos from recent Broadway musicals, the robe is given to the cast member who has the most chorus credits. Mr. Fruge's credits include: THE FULL MONTY, TITANIC, TOMMY, THE SECRET GARDEN, and BIG RIVER.
![]() Pi Douglass garnered the robe in THE WIZ, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and SELLING OF THE PRESIDENT Equity Robe Director Terry Marone kicked off the ceremony by introducing former robe recipients, including Jack Dabdoub (SHOWBOAT), Pi Douglass (JESUS CHRIST, SUPERSTAR, THE SELLING OF THE PRESIDENT and THE WIZ), Richard Korthaze, (HOW TO SUCCEED), Terry Violino (Ilya, Darling) and Vince Pesce, who received the robe in THE PAJAMA GAME. Also participating were Equity Communications Director David Lotz, Robe Historian Gloria Rosenthal and Equity Councillors Tom Miller and Maureen Moore, who is in the ensemble of THREEPENNY. Vince described the colorful history of the Gypsy Robe before announcing the newest recipient. Roumain proudly circled the stage three times while everyone in the cast touched the robe to receive its "blessing," according to the tradition. Later, he visited everyone backstage.

Another robe is on permanent display at the Equity Audition Center in New York City.
